What types of classic cars do Peter James insure?
As a specialist insurance broker, we offer cover for enthusiast owners of many types of classic cars.
Veteran Car Insurance (pre-1918)
We can arrange cover for the vehicles that started it all! We define a veteran car as a vehicle built prior to the end of the first World War, and can include models such as:
- Ford Model A
- Peugeot Type 3
Vintage Car Insurance (1918 – 1949)
This era of car production saw vehicle ownership increase and a move to mass production of vehicles, along with the launch of some of today’s most well-known car brands. Some examples of vintage cars are:
- Austin Seven
- Land Rover (Series 1)
- MG 14/28
Classic Car Insurance (1950 onwards)
This category covers the majority of classics and includes some of the most popular classic cars to own. The DVLA’s definition of a classic represents this group (and older) with vehicles that are over 40 years old being considered classic and ‘exempt’ from road tax.
Popular models we insure include:
- Morris Minor
- MG B
- Ford Escort
- Austin Healey
Modern Classic Insurance (1980 onwards)
Possibly the hardest category to define, but a modern classic is typically a vehicle produced between 1980 and 2000, however more modern marques where production has ceased (such as Morgan) could be considered a classic. Here’s a few examples of what we consider to be modern classics:
- Jaguar XJS
- Escort Cosworth
- TVR Chimaera
FAQs
What age do cars become a ‘classic car’?
The DVLA consider any vehicle that was produced over 40 years as a classic and as such ‘exempt’ from road tax. Our classic car policies are designed for enthusiast use i.e. your vehicle is not used as an ‘everyday’ car.
What is agreed value?
In the event there is a total loss claim, agreed value is the amount that will be paid (after a policy excess). At Peter James Insurance, we offer free agreed value with all policies as standard.
What is the difference between insurance for my classic car and my modern car?
Typically, classic cars are driven less than modern cars e.g. for enjoyment rather than for commuting purposes. With lower mileage, a classic car policy is often cheaper than a standard car insurance policy.
